In season in July

June has flown by and it’s the 1st of July tomorrow which brings with it (hopefully!) an abundance of picnics, salads and barbecues.

So what’s in season in July?

What's in season in July (UK) | Fish Fingers for Tea

It’s time for a quintessential English summer with strawberries, cherries and raspberries in the shops so there’s plenty of scope for topping pavlovas, demolishing bowlfuls with cream or heading to a pick your own and playing the old one for me, one for the basket game. While you’re there grab some redcurrants and you’ve got the makings of a summer pudding.

A trip to the market or supermarket reveals a colourful display of local fresh and crunchy veg and salad and which happily make a meal in their own right. If you fancy a bit more protein then lamb, crab, scallops and sardines are all excellent right now.

Markets are one of the best sources for seasonal food or if you’re lucky you might be the recipient of a glut from a friend’s allotment. We are not green fingered in the Fish Fingers for Tea household but established tomato plants are easy to look after and are just right for those of us with minimal garden space.

This is only the tip of the iceberg – with tons more veggies, herbs and meat at their, or coming into their, best summer eating looks good in the UK.
